The "10-Minute Rule" for Overcoming Daily Stress
Simple wellbeing advice from the KfitWell Community Project helping Newham residents build healthier minds and healthier lives.
Life Moves Fast — Your Mind Doesn't Have To
Between commuting, work deadlines, family responsibilities, financial pressures and constant phone notifications, life in London can feel overwhelming. Stress has become a normal part of everyday life for many people, but that doesn't mean it has to control your day.
One of the easiest mental wellbeing techniques is something called the 10-Minute Rule. It doesn't require special equipment, training or experience. It simply gives your brain time to slow down before reacting.
Why It Works
Stress often causes us to react immediately. We answer emails too quickly, argue without thinking, or become overwhelmed by problems that seem impossible in the moment.
A short pause helps interrupt that automatic response. Even ten minutes can lower emotional tension and improve your ability to think clearly.
Instead of reacting emotionally, you begin responding thoughtfully.
How to Practice the 10-Minute Rule
- Notice when you feel stressed.
- Step away from the situation if possible.
- Take slow, deep breaths.
- Drink some water or go for a short walk.
- Write down what's worrying you.
- Ask yourself:
- Can I solve this today?
- Does this matter next week?
- What's the smallest next step?
- Return after ten minutes with a calmer mindset.
Use the Rule in Everyday Life
The 10-Minute Rule works in many situations including:
- Work stress
- Family disagreements
- Financial worries
- Busy commuting
- Social media overload
- Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities
Remember, you're not ignoring the problem. You're simply giving yourself time to think before reacting.
Small Habits Build Better Mental Wellbeing
At the KfitWell Community Project, we encourage simple habits that improve both physical and mental wellbeing.
Managing stress doesn't always require major lifestyle changes. Sometimes one small habit repeated consistently makes the biggest difference.
- Daily walking
- Gentle stretching
- Regular sleep
- Talking with supportive friends
- Community volunteering
- Mindful breathing
